City of Beech Grove Moves Closer to Becoming "Digital City"
02/23/2007

BEECH GROVE, Ind. – The City of Beech Grove today officially took a step closer to achieving its reality for becoming a “digital city” – thanks to a plan that will provide the entire city with broadband, wireless Internet access.

With the recent release of an RFP (request for proposal), Mayor Joe Wright’s vision for making it possible for the citizens of Beech Grove to enjoy “…instant connectivity, broadband speeds and wireless mobility” from virtually anywhere in the city is coming into view.

According to Wright, Beech Grove’s plan is unique, in that the network will be owned by the city and not an outside entity, thus eliminating some unnecessary infrastructure while, at the same time, providing citizens with unprecedented access.

“This plan opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities,” says Wright. “Whether you’re a Mom watching your child go off to school – on a live video feed – or a businessperson looking to send an e-mail while in one of our parks – you’ll enjoy wireless access as never before.”

In bringing the project to fruition, Wright says the number one reason for providing broadband access is public safety. Another benefit of equal importance is that it will offer a tremendous economic development tool for attracting business to the community and increasing home values.

“In addition to a commercial network, we’ll have a higher speed, licensed, secure network, in which our public safety officials – our fire and police departments – can have expanded and more robust voice and data capabilities in the field that will also tightly integrate with the new digital upgrade to the county-wide emergency communications system,” explains Wright.

Wright says the city plans to select a provider for the service by the end of March, and plans to have portions of the system up and running sometime this year.

In terms of the system, the city will own the equipment. A company will be hired to service it and keep it running. “We don’t want to be an ISP (internet service provider), but we do believe there are advantages to controlling the equipment and setting the rates…it’s an approach we believe will provide lots of advantages,” says Wright.
