Beech Grove Mayor Highlights Economic Development In Speech
10/27/2006

Beech Grove Mayor Joe Wright reiterated a theme of "this is how your government is supposed to work" in a positive State of the City address Thursday night.

Beech Grove economy was a highlight of the speech. In his three years in office, Wright said he's erased a million dollar deficit and replaced it with a surplus that he says will reach $800,000 next year. The mayor said there's been millions spent on streets and sewer upgrades, the Beech Grove Fire Department has better equipment, and a major youth recreation area is in the works.

Wright says he’s also proud of a plan that includes creating an inland “port” at the old CSX yard, a facility he says could employ 1,500 workers in a few years.

“We think we can bring really good manufacturing and distribution jobs to this site by the virtue of having rail close by and having every direction of interstate equally close by to the site,” he told WIBC’s Dennis Bergendorf. “There are already users ready to sign up and developers ready to go.”

Sounds of the John Mellencamp song, "Crumbin' Down" then sounded as Wright talked about the effort to tear down the Emerson Avenue wall, which he says is the first step of many to make the area more retail friendly.

"We really had to get that front-door to Main Street built, and Emerson Avenue is the first big project along that way," he explained.
