Beech Grove Celebrates 100 Years

Beech Grove - Saturday was a big day for the city of Beech Grove, celebrating it's centennial and a re-birth.

Beech Grove's 100th birthday bash had people lining the streets to celebrate. It was not just an anniversary, but a new rhythm, a new mood downtown.

"I think everybody's excited to see all these neat changes start to happen," said Jenny Barton.

"Every day you go down Emerson Avenue, you see just a little bit more improvement, " said resident Ginny Ingram.

With Emerson still under construction the city unveiled its new front door, hoping to change economic fortunes here.

The path to progress started in April, when the city knocked down a three foot wall separating Main Street from Emerson a barrier blamed for Beech Grove's economic decline.

"That wall is gone and now the street is going back and today we celebrate a great new fixture, or structure at the head of our main street," said Beech Grove Mayor Joe Wright.

A centennial gateway, that's the cornerstone of a $2.2 million redevelopment project. A virtual tour shows future improvements that will include medians, sidewalks, and landscaping, which the city's already started.

As part of Saturday's celebration, Beech Grove received a designation as a "tree city USA", an award the city worked hard for, and one that matches revitalization efforts in Beech Grove.

Leaders say the physical changes create an emotional impact too.

"They're seeing their community get an identity," said Mayor Wright.

"I'm proud to be here, raised my kids here and I hope other families realize how lucky we are and want to be part of it," said Ingram.

Which is why, with much fanfare, residents celebrated the past and Beech Grove's bright future.
