Beech Grove Undergoing $2.2 Million Revitalization Project
09/16/2006

Beech Grove is undergoing a $2.2 Million revitalization project. The city dedicated it's Centennial Gateway Saturday as the first of many projects aimed to create a better, brighter Beech Grove.

"It's going to make it more walkable it's going to make it more pedestrian friendly, family friendly and a safe place for pedestrians to cross to a pocket park. It's going to be well lit, well landscaped it's going to be a comfortable place to be," Beech Grove Mayor Joe Wright said.

Along side idled railroad cars inside the Amtrak facility. There's construction equipment. Part of the Amtrak yard is being turned into a greenspace for youngsters and families to play.

Plans call for a new street, sidewalks even planting trees. It's part of a master plan that includes even making Beech Grove a wireless city.

"Beech Grove is going to have a real competitive advantage. We're going to take advantage of all of our assets. We don't have a lot of things in the way of having a wireless city, that being trees or tall buildings. So we're going to offer a great advantage to our citizens and our new businesses that want to come here and the businesses that are already here," Mayor Wright.

"I think there is a potential for what has been happening and what is yet to happen. I think it will overall be for the betterment of the city," Beech Grove resident Carl Settles said.

Beech Grove's main street was lined with additional businesses, all part of the city's birthday celebration. It's a celebration of the past and kicks off the community's plans for the future. City officials used tax increment financing revenue bonds to finance much of the project.
